Brandon Inge on offense is akin to Delmon Young on defense: you avoid it at all costs.
That said, Tigers MLB.com Beat Writer, Jason Beck, reported today that Inge asked for, and was granted, a chance to compete for the starting Second Base job this spring.
As soon as the news was discovered on twitter, Detroit fans exploded.
I’m not going to over analyze this. Inge is not a good player anymore. He hasn’t been replacement level since 2010 and the thought of him getting 450 at bats is nauseating. But he’s a professional. He’s making $5.5MM this year. He wants to play. The Tigers should, and will, at least give him the opportunity. Besides, it makes perfect sense to at least try it. He’s not blocking a younger prospect, he’s going into a position battle with two other players who are on the wrong end of thirty.
UPDATE: Look at his position on the Topps Baseball Card. Irony or Fate?
