Ace #3 (Anibal Sánchez) got the Tigers off to a good start. Tonight they send Ace #2 to the mound to snatch game 2.
Max Scherzer (2-0, 3.00 ERA) will toe the slab for the Tigers, while his teammates will take on Clay Buchholz (0-0, 4.50 ERA), who is finally healthy and pitching like it.
Buchholz made 16 starts and went 12-1, posting a stingy 1.74 ERA to go along with 75 hits, 36 walks, and 96 strikeouts in 108.1 IP. Buchholz, who missed a considerable chunk of the summer due to a neck injury, made 4 starts in September after his return, posting a 1.88 ERA in 24 IP, allowing 57 hits and 29 walks, while racking up 81 strikeouts. Buchholz is 2-1 against the Tigers in 8 career starts, with a 3.58 ERA. He’s given up 43 hits and 19 walks in 50.1 IP, with 33 strikeouts.
Scherzer, who had one of the more memorable moments in recent Tigers postseason history when he came into game 4 of the ALDS in relief, has struggled against the Boston Red Sox for his career, sporting a 7.02 ERA in 42.1 IP, while allowing 55 hits, 14 walks and 7 homeruns. However, Scherzer has been quite good against the Sox this season, holding them to just 4 runs in 14 IP, while giving up 11 hits and 3 walks, and striking out 14. Scherzer held the vaunted Red Sox offense to just a .216 BAA in 2013, while his career BAA vs. the Sox is .318.
