Verlander looks to give the Tigers a commanding 2-0 edge.

The Tigers look to go up 2-0 in their ALDS against the Oakland A’s tonight. While taking game 1 was big in its own right and a split on the road is awesome, taking game 2 means the Tigers would need to win one of the next possible three games to clinch a third straight ALCS appearance (with either Max Scherzer or Justin Verlander slotted for a penultimate fifth game). It would certainly be a tall task, as Oakland is a pretty dang good team, but the Tigers could help themselves in a huge way if they take game 2 tonight.

Justin Verlander (6-4, 4.22 ERA) will start for the Tigers, while Sonny Gray (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will take the mound for the A’s.

Verlander met the A’s in the 2012 postseason as well, beating them twice, and faced them twice during the 2013 season. He went 1-1 against Oakland this year as he posted a 3.27 ERA against them and threw 11 IP, allowing 6 runs—4 earned—on 7 hits to with 6 walks and 9 strikeouts. Verlander’s career numbers against Oakland in the postseason are also very good; he’s 3-0 in 3 starts with 21 IP, as he’s given up just 5 runs on 14 hits, 6 walks and 28 strikeouts. Verlander has posted a 0.94 WHIP and a .182 BAA in those 3 starts.

This is Gray’s first postseason start, and his first time facing the Tigers.
