Scherzer gets the game 1 start in Oakland tonight.

The Detroit Tigers take on the Oakland A’s tonight in Oakland in game one of the ALDS. Max Scherzer (21-3, 2.90 ERA) will get the start against Bartolo Colon (18-6, 2.65 ERA) in a matchup in two of the AL’s best in the regular season. Scherzer led the league in wins in the 2013 season, while Colon had a strong year and finished second in ERA to the Tigers’ Anibal Sánchez (he had a 2.65 ERA to Sanchez’s 2.57 mark).

During the season series this year, Scherzer faced Oakland twice and posted a 4.91 ERA, with eight runs—six earned—allowed in 11 IP on 13 hits and two walks, while striking out 16. He didn’t get a decision in either start, though the Tigers split the two games. In Scherzer’s first start, he went 6 IP and gave up two runs, one earned, to go with 11 strikeouts. In his final start against Oakland, during a rough stretch for the Tigers’ starters at the end of August, Scherzer went 5 IP, giving up six runs—five earned—on eight hits, with five strikeouts. That was the final game of the teams’ four-game series, in which the Tigers rallied from a 6-0 deficit to win 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth on a Torii Hunter walkoff homer and avoided a four-game sweep.

The Tigers have owned Colon for his career, going 8-10 against the A’s starter in 26 starts. Colon has a 5.40 ERA against the Tigers, who have a .310/.360/.475 line against him in 27 games overall. Colon, however, had two good starts against the Tigers this season, having opposed Scherzer and the Tigers in both matchups.

The announcing crew TBS has assembled for this series is an abysmal farce. Give me a Joe Buck…I didn’t think it was possible to prefer him over anyone.

Or do what I do and mute the TV and put on Dan and Jim!

Good point. I will definitely be doing that when I’m watching at home.
