I haven’t seen an official announcement but apparently the Tigers signed an Australian reliever, Warwick Saupold, this week.

I know nothing about him, and neither do you, but he pitched extremely well in the Australian Baseball League last season for the Perth Heat.

Detroit’s resident scout in Australia is Perth’s Kevin Hooker who is on the coaching staff of the Perth Heat so he would have had a great opportunity to see what Warwick was capable of during this stand out season…

I would assume, based on looking at the talent pool of the ABL, that the league would be equivalent to that of a Single A league in the US, but thats mere conjecture.

It will be interesting to see where they place him, if only to keep track if that interesting name.
