Tigers and Justin Verlander agree to contract extension through 2019 with vesting option for 2020

The Tigers have announced the move we’ve all been waiting for, a Justin Verlander extension, and it’s huge. Sources have indicated the deal is worth up to $202m, with a base salary of $180m over the next 7 seasons, with a $22m option in 2020.

This is big news, guys. How will the Tigers afford this? Cabrera will need to be extended soon, as will Scherzer and others. Who goes?

How does this move sit with you guys? Let us know in the comments!

Heh. Seriously, I told a colleague of mine this last year – all JV had to was name his price and Illitch would pay it. The Tigers look like they want to keep him a Tiger for life, and the only way I see him leaving is if the Tigers eventually return to 1993-2005 form and he still hasn’t won a ring. As for Migs and Scherzer, they’ll get their due – Illitch is not shy about paying people who have earned it and is desperate to bring the title back to Detroit, especially after making the playoffs three times and the World Series twice (getting embarrassed both times) since 2006.
