Game 151: Twins (62-89) @ Tigers (80-70)

Get ready, boys and girls. We have a long day of baseball ahead of us today. The good news is that according to, there is only a 20% chance of rain in Detroit today. However, temperatures are only supposed to get up to 58 degrees, so it might get a bit chilly at Comerica Park, especially in the nightcap. But let’s focus on Game 1 for now. After leaving his last start after only two innings with shoulder fatigue, Max Scherzer says he’s 100% and good to go for today’s start. He’s performed well in two previous starts against the Twins this year (both at Target Field), the first being a rain-shortened 3-run, 5.1 inning performance on May 26th, and the second involving seven shutout innings with ten strikeouts on August 15th. And thanks to Doug Fister’s complete-game effort yesterday, the entire bullpen is rested and available for today.

The Twins will start lefty Scott Diamond, who has probably been their most consistent starter this year. He’s very much a pitch-to-contact guy (1.58 BB/9 and only 4.7 K/9), and he’s a ground ball pitcher. However, he’s not been quite as effective over the past month. He’s 1-6 in his last seven starts (with the lone win being part of an 18-9 victory the Twins had over the White Sox), and he gave up six runs in 5.1 innings (including two home runs) against Chicago. He’s only made one start against the Tigers this year, and it was a good one where he pitched seven innings and only gave up two runs on July 5th. The Tigers did win that game thanks to a five-run eighth inning against the Twins bullpen. It’s worth noting that his season-high in pitches thrown is 102, which came way back in his first start on May 8th. He has not reached the 100 pitch mark in any start since August 18th.
