Tigers making push for Gio Gonzalez

From @susanslusser on twitter who covers the Oakland A’s for the San Fransisco Chronical:

I learned from multiple Detroit team sources tonight that the Tigers have strong interest in Gio Gonzalez and they probably would be willing to part with top prospect Jacob Turner, a right-handed starter, in any deal.

To land Gonzalez, of course, it will take a package of significantly more: likely one more of the club’s top three or four prospects and several other decent young players. (I can’t repeat it enough: Think Dan Haren deal.)

This would be a game changing addition to Detroit if it actually happened. The Tigers need a lefty starting pitcher and Gonzalez is the class of what’s available via trade.

UPDATE 1 @ 2:35AM

MLB Trade rumors do say the Tigers aren’t sure they can match a Yankees offer so this is nowhere near a sure thing but I’ve also pulled a quote from a Ken Rosenthal article:

The Yankees have had only minimal conversations with the A’s about Gonzalez and are not a factor in the discussions, a source said.

UPDATE 2 @ 1102AM

Verlander/Fister/Gonzalez/Scherzer/Porcello. This would be certainly formidable. Something I would almost say is worth giving up Jacob Turner for…and maybe another top Minor Leaguer but no way can detroit give up Boesch or Castellanos. If the A’s insist on either one if them, then DD should walk away.
