Despite not having pitched in a Major League game for roughly 8 months, Oswalt was sharp in his return last Friday against the Colorado Rockies. He allowed one run in 6+ innings, showing the same mix of pitches that has made him one of the best pitchers in baseball over the past decade. He also showed a Verlander-esque mix of pitch speeds, ranging from a mid-60s (!) curveball to his low 90s fastball. Oswalt has never faced the Tigers in 12+ big league seasons.

Fister wasn’t particularly solid in his last start, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) to the Pittsburgh Pirates — who are still playing over their heads, by the way — but the offense yet again left him out to try in a 4-1 loss. Still, Fister threw 91 pitches and struck out 7 in 6 innings and didn’t suffer any ill effects afterward. I would expect that Leyland takes away the training wheels tonight. Hopefully Fister rewards him with a strong effort.
