Come to Comerica Park to See the Detroit Mudhens Play Baseball

With Alex Avila placed on the disabled list and Omir Santos being designated for assignment (I don’t think either should be shocking moves), the Detroit Tigers now have three regular position players and a starting pitcher in the disabled list. given the fact that Ryan Raburn is toiling away in Toledo and the bullpen turnover, the current team, as of Wednesday at 3:30 pm, has eight players on its active roster that actually began the year in Triple-A Toledo.

Current Active Tigers who started the year in Toledo

Catcher Bryan Holaday, Pitcher Casey Crosby, Pitcher Jose Ortego, Pitcher Drew Smyly, Pitcher Brayan Villarreal, Pitcher Luis Marte, Outfielder Quintin Berry, Outfielder Matt Young, and even though Infielder Danny Worth was on the Opening Day roster that was merely because the Tigers had Brandon Inge on the DL to start the year.

Regardless of performance, this isn’t an ideal situation or one you hope for. At 25-30 the Tigers have the same number of losses as the Kansas City Royals do and since starting the season 9-3 they have a worse winning percentage than the Minnesota Twins.

This is the lineup that is going to face Jeanmar Gomez and the Cleveland Indians tonight:

1. Quintin Berry (L) CF – fringe minor leaguer, WAR 0.2
2. Ramon Santiago (S) 2B -fringe major leaguer, WAR -0.5
3. Miguel Cabrera (R) 3B – Herculean All-Star, WAR 1.5
4. Prince Fielder (L) 1B – Herculean All-Star, WAR 1.0
5. Delmon Young (R) DH – fringe major leaguer, WAR -0.2
6. Brennan Boesch (L) RF – fringe major leaguer, WAR -1.6
7. Jhonny Peralta (R) SS – average major leaguer, WAR 0.1
8. Don Kelly (L) LF – fringe major leaguer, WAR -0.2
9. Bryan Holaday (R) C – fringe minor leaguer, Major League Debut

The Tigers have two major leaguers on their roster tonight who are contributing above replacement level. How do you expect them to score?

The funny thing is we all spent so much time and grief wondering *Who* would make the team as the 25th man on the roster. Little did we know the answer was “All of the Mud Hens”.

My question, why not just bring up Brantly? Holaday has been consitent at not hitting at any level. Is his defense the second coming of Pudge? I would say the Tiger’s are shopping him, but I don’t see a .230 lifer in the minors bringing a lot in a trade.

This is his first full year of pro ball. There’s no way he could handle a big league staff.

But they both were drafted in 2010 – Brantly in round 3 and Holoday in the 6th.

They were, sorry I was thinking McCann for some reason. Holaday is viewed as having better defense. Which is important unlike some people think.

So I can see them trying Holaday out because it helps the defense and if he plays well, he could be a trade chip
