Tigers Draft College Arm Drew Verhagen

With the 154th pick the Tigers went from the state of Texas to Tennessee and Vanderbilt University star Drew Verhagen, a right handed pitcher (he’s from Texas though!).

Verhagen is huge. 6’6 225 with a fastball that tops out at 95. I haven’t seen or heard of him at all, honestly, so I have no idea what to say about him, other than what I’ve been told:

His breaking stuff doesn’t break and he has an odd delivery.

Cool.

“VerHagen throws a very heavy ball with a quality breaking pitch, according to Vanderbilt baseball coach Tim Corbin. His fastball sits around 95 mph, but has yet to establish any effective secondary pitches.”

Which is an odd thing to say, since I would assume that a “quality breaking pitch” would also be considered an “effective secondary” pitch.

My guess…. just like Castellanos, this kid is the answer to the Tiger’s troubles at second base.

I also think the Tiger’s are grooming Turner for second…. Danny Fields is not on the DL, but he is secretly training to play 2b too.
