Doug Fister to the DL, Andy Dirks has a sore achilles and is out, Danny Worth is in the 2-hole tonight and Gerald Laird is your designated hitter — let’s go win a ball game, all right!?
Lineup after the jump …
Tigers (D. Smyly – L)
Red Sox (J. Lester – L)
Laird’s hitting .316/.341/.868 with two home runs this season in 42 plate appearances and he’s 2-for-11 with four strikeouts in his career against Lester. I was actually curious why he wasn’t put in the 2-hole (heh), because, well, because DANNY WORTH. But I guess Laird DH’ing AND being in the 2-hole would be just too much for fans to handle. Also, Worth is 1-for-2 with a walk (!!) in his career against Lester, so that’s worth a promotion.
In all seriousness, a lineup featuring Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder will always be good enough for me because Eric Munson and Kevin Witt scarred me for life, but I understand the frustration.
Hopefully, Drew Smyly can rediscover some of his early magic. He’s given up 11 runs in his last 14.2 innings after allowing two or fewer runs in each of his first six starts. Good news is that Lester is strugggggggalllllin even worse; he’s given up 11 runs over his last two starts (10 innings). In fact, Smyly’s having a better season than a guy I thought would be contending for a Cy Young this year. So you’re telling me there’s a chance…
